<To my friends , Myanmarese struggling in the lonely war>

We are truely truely sorry for you.

Nothing we can do for you except just being worried with words of mouth.

Nothing we can do except just showing much rage with tight fists.

So so sorry again, We feel so ashamed of our powerlessness.

Even though we know that this letter might not be any helpful, we are writing this letter.

There is a song coming down from long long ago in Korea.

“ Hey, turtle, turtle. Put your head out, if not, you will be roasted and eaten”.

This song called 'Gu gi ga' has many lasting meanings.

Here We want to tell about an opinion, which is about kind of spelling for exorcising an evil spirits.

It was told there might be similar custom called 'Ttanppong jji' in Myanmar, where you bang and hit something noisy to drive out evils.

Whenever our ancestors were also suffering from extreme disasters and something terrible, they considered it as the tricks of evil spirits.

And they sang this song, ‘Gu gi ga’, hitting the ground with a stick to drive out the evil.

They thought the devils were surrounded with the thick armor like turtle's shell, hiding under the shell and doing such terrible things to people.

To drive the devils out, it is so important that lots of people gathering should sing the song to the tune and hit the ground with a stick.

The howling sound of the people can make the ground roar and the sky shake, which could make the horrible devil put out its head from the thick shell.

See how much weak the pulled out head is..? They are just weak, so poor.

Fortunately the turtle driven out from the shell might not be roasted in people's mercy.

Now you are fighting the turtle like the devil.

Like we Gwangju did against the military coup in 1980, the fight you are doing for your lives can be another type of 'Gu gi ja' and your custom banging pots and pans called 'Ttanppong jji'.

Until the evil turtle takes out its head, removes its veil, admits their fault and backs down, you should protest against it, crying and banging with all your might.

We know you have to fight with the hopeless despair after even lots of death.

We Gwangju know you. we feel you. we cry for your tears.

Myanmar! The all of the world are listening to your suffering.

Even we might look wavering, the world surly will do act as you want soon.

Your huge and strong crying will make the conscience of the world act.

So we sing loudly even not becoming any help for you.

'Hey, Turtle, turtle, put your head out, if not, you will be roasted and eaten.'

To love,

Jin Lee (novelist)
